Johnson Controls Receives Award from the Department of Commerce

The U.S. Department of Commerce bestowed its Export Achievement Award on Johnson Controls during ceremonies held in Boston Feb. 13 at the International District Energy Association’s 21st Annual Campus Energy Conference, for successfully securing district cooling business in the Middle East.

Colleen Litkenhaus, deputy assistant secretary for Domestic Operations for the U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service, presented the award to Johnson Controls representatives Anwar Hassan, vice president of Industrial Products, and Joseph Brillhart, service branch manager, based in Manhattan, N.Y.

“Last year, Johnson Controls made several large export sales to the United Arab Emirates – two of the largest being sales of $11 million and $6 million of YORK chiller products to the district cooling sector,” said Litkenhaus. “These exports helped lead to the creation of around 25 new jobs in the U.S. In addition, they also made significant sales of YORK chillers in the countries of Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, all supporting large district cooling projects in those countries. It’s the dedication and hard work of U.S. businesses like Johnson Controls that keep our country strong and growing.”

Litkenhaus also thanked IDEA for the strong partnership it has with the Department of Commerce in working together to assist IDEA members increase exports of district energy products and services to the Middle East and other international markets. The number of small- and medium-sized companies that export has nearly doubled since 1992. In 2006, the U.S. Commercial Service helped to facilitate nearly 12,000 export successes worth billions of dollars in U.S. export sales.

"District energy is an amazingly efficient, environmentally responsible method of heating and cooling buildings, no matter where they are located," said Allen Martin, vice president and general manager, North American Systems, Latin America, & Middle East, for Johnson Controls. "We're honored to receive this award as it further validates the importance of meeting customers' energy efficiency needs, and for contributing to the growing strength and vitality of the United States economy."
